LTL 1.9 bln from EU Cohesion Fund for quality water supply and wastewater treatment

Water supply and wastewater management systems are implemented and developed in Lithuania under the 2007-2013 Cohesion incentive action program “Environment and Sustainable Development”.

“Our goal is to ensure central quality water supply not only to cities, but also to urban communities that have less than 2,000 inhabitants”, said Artūras Paulauskas, Minister of Environment. LTL 1.9 bln from the EU cohesion funds are dedicated to this stage.”

The minister issued an order, confirming the list of financing conditions.  Funds will go to municipal governments or water supply and wastewater management companies according to their proposed projects.  Applications for projects on wastewater management system construction and reconstruction are accepted and registered by the Environmental Project Management Agency.  Funding will be made available for water treatment installations, network extension and renovation, water quality improvement installation renewal and construction projects.  Financial support will be provided to projects that are carried out according to the EU directive requirements and foresee parallel water supply and wastewater management system development, water quality improvement installation restoration and construction.

The minister noted that these EU funds constitute important assistance to municipalities, which have to ensure that by the end of 2014, quality water supply is available to 95 percent of our country’s population.
