Green vacation in Palanga

The European Green Vacation project was launched in Palanga last Friday, 8 August.  The project was initiated by the European Commission Representation in Lithuania.  The Ministry of Environment is one of the partners in this project seeking to introduce European environmental protection measures to the city’s tourists.

For two weeks, until 23 August, the residents and visitors of Palanga sea resort will be able to visit a special open-air venua in Palanga, where the experience and solutions found by different European countries in tackling climate change and other environmental problems will be presented.  Visitors will be able to enjoy thematic events, movie shows, ecological contests and other entertaining activities.  All European Green Vacation events are free of charge.

At the same time, different resort areas will be visited by a play
ful seal.  Baltic seals have been chosen as this event’s mascott.  There are only close to 5,500 of these mammals surviving in the North and Central Baltic Sea regions, down from a population of about 200,000 in the beginning of the 20th century. Their population suffered significant decreases because of intensive hunting and water pollution. Today, Baltic seals are on the verge of extinction, because they live and procreate on ice.  Since water temperature in  the Baltic Sea, according to scientists, may increase by 6 degrees before the year 2100, thus accelerating iceberg melting, this may have a catastrophic effect on the survival possibilities of these animals.  Even now, because of global warming, icebergs are starting to melt sooner than expected; as a result seal offsprings lose their native ice and die before they are strong enough to fend for themselves.
