Government approves draft climate change bill


On 1 April, the Government approved the Draft Climate Change Bill of the Republic of Lithuania prepared by the Ministry of Environment. The draft will be submitted to the Parliament.  

The draft bill is aimed at regulating social relationships in the area of climate change management, defining the competence of public authorities and bodies, and providing for measures to manage climate change in in order to fulfil the country’s obligations under the United National Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.

The bill sets forth the key national climate change management policy strategies and provisions for the preparation of an action plan to implement them, the rights, obligations and responsibility of persons performing economic activities resulting in greenhouse gas emissions under the EU directive establishing a scheme for greenhouse gas emission allowance trading.
