Construction of small flats legalised in Lithuania

An order of the Lithuanian Minister of Environment providing for the construction of flats smaller than 34 sq metres came into effect on 8 April. It amended the residential construction technical regulation approved in 2003, according to which flats could not be smaller than 34 sq metres. Nevertheless, the new order of the minister does not repeal the previous requirement that the total area of a room with a bath and a toilet cannot be smaller than 4 sq metres, one room of a flat cannot be smaller than 16 sq metres, and the useful floor area per person cannot be smaller than 14 sq metres.

Small flats are built all over the world. According to Gediminas Kazlauskas, the Minister of Environment, the number of small flats in Lithuania will depend on market needs. The experience of other countries shows that small flats are the most popular among students and people having financial difficulties.
