Most Lithuanian residents provided with high-quality drinking water

"Water for Cities", this year's slogan of the World Water Day marked in Lithuania for the eleventh time already, was chosen to draw the international community's attention to the need for solving urban water resources management problems in the wake of rapid growth of the number of citizens as actively as possible. The celebration of the World Water Day was initiated by the United Nations in 1992. Lithuania has been marking this day since 2000.

Lithuania is one of the few countries in the world having large reserves of fresh groundwater and the only Member State of the European Union using this water well-protected against pollution for centralised supply.

A year ago, last March, the Ministry of Environment initiated the inventory of national drinking water supply systems. According to Dalius Krinickas, Director of the Ministry's Water Department, the inventory results have shown that controlled-quality drinking water is supplied to three quarters – 73.5% – of the Lithuanian population. The vast majority of them are provided with water through pipelines. And the number of such residents is on the rise. The number of individual wells that supply water to private house residents is growing as well. According to the abovementioned inventory results, there were over 65,600 such wells in Lithuania last year (some 50,000 in 2009).

By 31 December 2014, quality water is planned to be supplied to 95% of the country's population. Whether or not this task will be implemented successfully primarily depends on municipalities. The Constitution, the Law on Drinking Water Supply and Wastewater Management and the Law on Local Self-Government oblige them to ensure drinking water extraction and supply as well as the provision of wastewater treatment services within their territories.
