A new system will warn about elemental natural phenomena2011-04-28
An early warning system for elemental natural phenomena implemented by the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service (LHMS) under the Ministry of Environment will enable the society and special services to receive reliable information about forecasted dangerous, elemental and catastrophic meteorological and hydrological phenomena. Now such information is available to each Internet user.
By clicking Dangerous Meteorological Phenomena or Dangerous Hydrological Phenomena on the website of LHMS (Error! Hyperlink reference not valid.) one can learn about the current situation and find a 3-day forecast. Dangerous natural phenomena alerts shall be issued for the following seven regions: the Baltic coast and the Curonian Lagoon, Central Lithuania, seashore and the Lagoon area, Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest regions.
The new system will receive information from all meteorological posts and stations, and this will enable the weatherpersons to prepare information for the society more quickly and more efficiently. According to Vida Augulienė, Director of LHMS, forecasted elemental natural phenomena alerts will enable to take measures in time and to avoid or minimise serious consequences.
An early warning system for elemental natural phenomena was developed and implemented as part of the project financed by the Kingdom of Norway and Lithuania.
