Latvian Neighbours Take Interest in Lithuania’s Experience

Neighbouring countries take interest in the experience of our country in implementing EU support projects financed with the resources of Cohesion Fund, particularly those in the sphere of mud management infrastructure. A delegation from the Ministry of Environment and Regional Development of Latvia visited Lithuania for this purpose.

Latvian experts familiarised themselves with facilities in Šiauliai, Tauragė, Kaunas and Elektrėnai which are partially financed in the framework of EU cohesion promotion action program 2007 - 2013. They inquired about progress in handling waste, operating waste water treatment plants, etc. According to Inesius Kiškis, Director of EU Support Administration Department of the Ministry of Environment, the problem of mud management is particularly relevant in Latvia because so far action in this sphere is limited to discussions and no projects are being implemented.

The guests also visited the company UAB Vilniaus vandenys where they inspected an operating waste water treatment plant and mud management installations which are currently under construction. According to the company’s management, approx. 200 tons of wastewater mud accumulates in the wastewater treatment plant every day. After state-of-the-art mud treatment plant is constructed, the amount of mud will be significantly reduced and it will no longer emit the smell, while resulting biogas will be used to produce power and heat. Construction cost of the mud treatment plant is estimated at LTL 176 million; EU support accounts for more than a half of the amount and amounts to LTL 94 million. It is planned that the first mud fermentation installation will be launched this year while the remaining ones will be put into operation during next year.

Before leaving, the guests noted that they would offer Latvian environmentalists to use the experience gained by our country and maintain contacts with their Lithuanian colleagues.
