European ministers decided to draft an international agreement on the protection of forests

The Minister of the Environment Gediminas Kazlauskas, together with ministers of other European countries responsible for forests and forestry, signed a decision in Oslo which will serve as a basis for starting negotiations regarding a binding international agreement in the area of forestry. The plan is to set up a negotiations’ committee which will draft this agreement. This is the first attempt of European countries to prepare an agreement of the entire region on the protection of forests.

In Oslo, the ministers gathered to the 6th conference on cooperation of European countries in the area of forestry policy Forest Europe. The conference was organised by Norway and Spain. This conference attracts representatives of more than 40 European countries, including all the Member States of the EU.

According to the Minister Gediminas Kazlauskas, the decision of the countries involved in the process Forest Europe to start negotiations on the preparation of an international agreement sets a good example of cooperation in the sector of forestry for other countries of the world. Such an agreement will obligate European countries to adhere to the principles of sustainable forest management.

The ministers have also signed a document regarding the vision of the process Forest Europe until 2020 as well as its mission, objectives and tasks. The document lays down actions to be taken on a voluntary basis both at the national and the European level based on declarations and resolutions adopted by the ministers in previous conferences.
