No more white spots in European weather maps over Lithuania

A meteorological radio locator of a new generation began operating in Laukuva. Its purchase was financed by the National Investment Programme, says Vida Augulienė, Director of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of Environment. The radio locator, which was made by the Finnish company Vaisala, cost LTL 5 million. The locator’s tower was made and erected by the Lithuanian firm Montuotojas.

Lithuania began conducting radio meteorological observations in 1974 at the Vilnius airport. These observations stopped in 2000 when the meteorological radio location station had to be shut down as it became worn out and obsolete. Since then, there has been a white spot over our country in European radio meteorological maps for an entire decade. It will disappear once the double polarisation Doppler-type meteorological radio locator is put into service in Laukuva.

Such locators are used by national hydrometeorological services of many European countries, including those of neighbouring Latvia and Poland. European countries have a common network of meteorological radio locators, exchange data of meteorological radars and other information. The Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service also plans to join the NORDRAD-BALTRAD network which is currently composed of 35 meteorological radio locators operating in Nordic and Baltic countries.

The second meteorological radio locator will be built in Lithuania next year. The project is also financed by the National Investment Programme. This locator will be located in Nemenčinė neighbourhood in Vilnius district.

According to Vida Augulienė, hazardous natural calamities cannot be avoided but early warning systems make it possible to take precautions and mitigate their effects. Accurate and timely weather information is vitally important in emergencies. Information of the radio locator is very useful in providing services to such industries as air transport, marine transport, road transport, energy, agriculture and other consumers.
