Ministry of Environment to allocate support for purchasing green buses and boiler rooms

The Lithuanian Environmental Investment Fund has announced a call for applications for financial assistance for purchasing environmentally-friendly buses and two categories of boiler rooms. Money received from the sale of surplus emission allowances on the international market will be used for this purpose.

According to Gediminas Kazlauskas, the Minister of Environment, the successful sale of emission allowances after intensive and tough negotiations has provided a considerably amount of funds, which will be used purposefully.

The application procedure for financial assistance for the renovation of buildings of educational institutions was launched in August (LTL 50 million has been allocated). Municipalities can already apply for support for purchasing environmentally-friendly buses for public transport fleets (LTL 89.7 million has been allocated). Almost LTL 60 million more has been earmarked for two categories of boiler rooms: LTL 42 million will be allocated for larger (500 kW to 5 MW) and LTL 17.3 million for smaller (up to 500 kW) boiler rooms.

This support will not only facilitate replacement of old vehicles of municipal bus fleets but will also enable managers of schools, pre-school educational institutions, hospitals and other public buildings to start using biofuels for heating needs. This will reduce the final cost of heating for consumers (according to statisticians, the cost of heating in municipalities using biofuels is up to 30–50% lower) as well as ’s dependence on fossil fuels.

“The funds received from the sale of surplus emission allowances will not only allow us to ensure higher quality and healthier life but will also contribute to mitigation of the effect of climate change. And this is the objective of both and the rest of the world,” Minister Gediminas Kazlauskas said.

Applications for the purchase of buses and modernisation of public buildings will be accepted until 30 September and applications for the purchase of boiler rooms until 31 October. Applications are planned to be evaluated and financial assistance is expected to be allocated this year. More detailed information on competitive procedures, their course, requirements for applicants and conditions for financial assistance is available on the website of the Lithuanian Environmental Investment Fund at
