Lithuania to become full member of EUMETSAT


At the end of last year, Gediminas Kazlauskas, the Lithuanian Minister of Environment, and Alain Ratier, the Director General of the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), signed an agreement on the accession of to the EUMETSAT Convention on 1 January 2014. This document will be submitted to the Lithuanian Parliament for ratification. In addition, they signed an agreement to extend Lithuania’s cooperation with EUMETSAT until 1 January 2014 when the country will become a party to the said Convention.

According to Vida Augulienė, the Director of the Lithuanian Hydrometeorological Service under the Ministry of the Environment, accession to the EUMETSAT Convention means that the country becomes a full member of this international organisation. Lithuania will have unlimited access to all data from meteorological satellites and information products created on their basis, as well as a voting right in the EUMETSAT Council, the corporate governance body,  and Lithuanian citizens will be able to get a job at the headquarters of the organisation in accordance with the general competitive procedure.

A total of 27 European countries are members of EUMETSAT. Four more countries – , , and – have the Cooperating State status. EUMETSAT operates meteorological satellites Meteosat-8 and Meteosat-9, which monitor the European and African continents and the Atlantic Ocean from geostationary orbit, as well as a Metop polar-orbiting satellite.

Since 2008, EUMETSAT has also performed oceanographic observations using a Jason-2 satellite. Satellite information facilitates timely and accurate weather forecasting, warning of dangerous and disastrous atmospheric phenomena, monitoring of climate and environmental change and human impact on the environment.
