Catalogue of springs and streams of Lithuania to be prepared

The Lithuanian Geological Survey at the Ministry of Environment is planning to prepare a catalogue of springs and streams.  Jonas Satkūnas, the deputy director of the Survey, said that the most important springs would be included in the underground water monitoring network.

The nature in our country created favourable conditions for accumulation of large underground water resources.  Hydrogeologists claim that in Lithuania it is possible to acquire more than three million cubic meters of fresh drinking water from the underground water resources without doing any harm to the nature. The resources and the state of underground water are closely related with the atmosphere and climate change processes, the regime of the water of surface rivers and lakes, springs and swamps. Springs or streams are the fountainhead of ground water in the slopes of rivers and lakes or the fountainhead of artesian water in surface water reservoirs and the slopes of their valleys.

In order to investigate springs and streams as thoroughly as possible, the Lithuanian Geological Survey requests to send data about them by completing a registration table, where the name, the coordinates and other information must be indicated. More information about the registration process is provided in the website of the Lithuanian Geological Survey

According to Jonas Satkūnas, the Lithuanian Geological Survey is planning to issue a series of publications about springs and streams in national, regional parks or separate regions. This year the first publication “Springs and streams of : Aukštadvaris regional park” saw daylight. It contains sufficient information about the state of springs and springy areas, a possibility to adapt them to visitors. This information was collected after analyzing the chemical composition of the springs of this park and after assessing geological and hydrogeological conditions of their formation.
