Juozas Virbickas’ award for protection and amplification of fish

The Ministry of Environment has set up an award for best-performing public environmental control officials, freelance environmental inspectors, fishermen’s associations, science institutions and their staff for protecting and amplifying the fish stocks. The award was named after one of the most prominent Lithuanian ichthyologists of the twentieth century, Prof Juozas Virbickas.

Minister of Environment Valentinas Mazuronis approved its regulations yesterday. Juozas Virbickas’ award will be honoured for merits in protecting fish stocks and fishing control in even years and for merits in the fields of the science of fishery, public education and promotion of sustainable use of fish stocks in uneven years.

This is already the third nominal award of the Ministry of Environment. Viktoras Bergas and Česlovas Kudaba awards were set up in 1999. The first one is handed out in uneven years to the staff of the Ministry of Environment and of its reporting institutions for significant projects or long-term efficient activity in the field of environmental formation and protection and the second one (in even years) to Lithuanian public and other non-governmental organisations or their members and other individuals for proactive public contributions or important projects in environmental formation and protection.

Juozas Virbickas’ award, similarly to the other two, is LTL 8,000. It is allocated from the funds of the Environmental Support Programme earmarked to restoration and preservation of fish stocks.

The award will help to perpetuate the memory of professor Juozas Virbickas (1939–2006). He is considered founder of Lithuania’s school of the science of fishery, who directed the institutes for ecology, zoology and parasitology for many years and is author of many books, dictionaries and scientific articles. The professor’s contributions laid a foundation for the development of sustainable fishery in Lithuania.
