Earth flags raised2013-03-20
On the 20th of March, as every year on the World Earth Day, the Earth Flag waved in Vilnius next to the Seimas building. It was raised by five hundred young nature lovers from across Lithuania together with their teachers and representatives from environmental authorities, municipalities and non-governmental organisations at a special commemoration event at Kaunas Musical Theatre held by the Ministry of Environment and Lututė publishing house, which publishes books on nature. After the commemoration the children will visit Tadas Ivanauskas’ Museum of Zoology, the Zoo and the Botanic Gardens of Vytautas Magnus University.
Earth flags are also raised during other public events for the World Earth Day run by environmental authorities, directorates of state parks, municipalities, education establishments and non-governmental organisations.
The United Nations officially declared the World Earth Day in 1971. It is celebrated on the spring equinox to mark the precise moment when day and night become equal in length on all spots of the globe. After Lithuania regained Independence, initiator of the Earth Day John McConnell addressed our nation calling to become Earth guardians and to mark the spring equinox, which falls on the 20th or 21st of March at different locations of the planet, as the World Earth Day. In response to this address, the Restorative Seimas (the then Supreme Council) officially legitimated the Earth Day in Lithuania in 1992.
