The implementation of two European Economic Area programs has begun in Lithuania

Today, the Ministry of Environment held a conference presenting the European Economic Area's “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services” and “Integrated Marine and Inland Water Management” programs. These programs were ratified two months ago by the European Economic Area's Financial Mechanism Committee and are now being implemented in Lithuania.

Representatives from scientific institutions, non-governmental organizations, and the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment and Directorate for Nature Management participated in the conference, as did the programs' social and economic partners. They learned about the programs' plans, expected outcomes, technical requirements and application evaluation processes.

“After this conference, we hope that many will become interested in some of the actions that will be funded through public competitions and will apply,” - said Vice-minister of Environment Almantas Petkus.

This is not the first time that Norway, Iceland and Lichtenstein helped finance Lithuania's environmental protection sector. 40 mil. Lt. will have been invested into this goal by 2016. According to the Vice-minister, the Ministry of Environment, as these programs' operator, has another important mission – to ensure that the European Economic Area's Financial Mechanism's funding is used as effectively as possible and that efforts to maintain biodiversity and improve water conditions achieve optimal results.
