A cooperation agreement is being planned with Moldova

Today, minister Valentinas Mazuronis met with Moldovan minister of environment Gheorghe Salaru and discussed potential opportunities to develop their two nations' environmental cooperation based on the EU Eastern Partnership initiative.

Valentinas Mazuronis introduced his guest to different fields in the Lithuanian environmental sector and with Lithuania's environmental priorities during its presidency of the EU Council.

Gheorghe Salaru spoke about the environmental issues that cause the most problems in Moldova. One of these is water treatment. The majority of the nation's rural people do not have treatment facilities. Moldova is also reviewing its waste management sector strategies. They intend to remove their current smaller garbage dumps, of which there are about a thousand, in favor of ten larger, more modern dumps. The Minister also spoke about plans to straighten out the legal regulation of protected territories and to address other pressing environmental concerns in his country.

Moldova has declared its intent to join the European Union. An EU and Moldovan action plan is currently being implemented that has provided for various political, economic and legal reform recommendations. For the implementation of this plan, the nation will be invited to various EU initiatives and programs, and it will be offered the opportunity to receive EU financial support for sectors being reformed.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed the potential to create a cooperative agreement between the two nations.
