Sewage Treatment Plant Testing Laboratory Is Expanding Operations

The Construction Products Certification Centre's (SPSC) Wastewater Treatment Plant Laboratory based in Maišiagala, Vilnius region, is expanding its operations.

It is planning to start testing of effluent treatment at tertiary treatment plants and septic tanks.

Already this year, the laboratory located in Maišiagala will begin equipment testing in accordance with the new standards. Currently, there are only three laboratories in Europe that have been accredited and notified in accordance with such standards. Therefore, it is reasonably expected that there will be customers who will want their equipment to be tested in accordance with the new standards in Lithuania. Only the equipment tested by notified laboratories can be marked with the CE marking and distributed in the EU market.

The septic tanks are hermetic sewage removal pits with outflows. Such sewage facilities are large sources of environmental pollution. They cause a lot of environmental problems in many European countries.

15-20 years ago, before small treatment facilities appeared, septic tanks or sewage removal pits were being installed, mostly near private houses, and there was no possibility of connecting them to the centralized sewage networks.

"The situation in Lithuania is quite good, mostly because sewage removal pits that were sealed, at least formally, or clogging with time were being installed, and septic tanks dominated in the neighbouring countries and in many European countries," SPSC Treatment Plant Laboratory director Arnas Danila says. "These facilities are now causing a lot of pollution problems."

The new standard is expected to help tackle the emerging environmental problems. This standard is the first document that regulates the equipment for septic effluent treatment and is applicable in the entire Europe.
