US environmental experts to share their experience in the exploration of shale in Lithuania

On 26–27 May, Scott Perry and Kurt Klapowski, oil and gas experts of the Environmental Protection Department, Pennsylvania, the USA, will be visiting Lithuania. They will present to Lithuanian geological and environmental experts, business and academic representatives the experience of the State of Pennsylvania (the USA) in the exploration of shale by extracting gas and oil from it and discuss the economic and social impact on the State of Pennsylvania (the USA) and the US economy.

The guests will participate in the expert-level meetings with the specialists of the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Environmental Protection Departments and the Geological Survey of Lithuania and deliver public lectures in the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and Klaipėda University.

The visit of the guests was planned on the basis of mutual cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other Lithuanian institutions and the US State Department under the UGTEP (Unconventional Gas Technical Engagement Program) Programme. This Programme is aimed at transferring the US good practice and experience in the field of shale exploration and gas and oil extraction to other states. This Programme is being successfully implemented in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Great Britain, Chile, India, China, Kazakhstan and many other states. The Programme participants help the cooperating countries design safe and effective legal, environmental and economic schemes for the use of shale.

The State of Pennsylvania with the population of 12.7 million is two times larger than Lithuania and has one of the largest shale oil deposits in the whole world. Here, more than 8,000 bores were drilled; the majority of these bores supply gas to customers. The successful use of these resources had a great impact on the whole economy of the state and the country – energy resources became cheaper and thousands of new jobs having a high value added were created. The USA has changed from a gas importer to a gas exporter.
