Sizeable yield of environmental films, broadcasts and articles to the public

The environment and ecology channel “” of the Delfi news portal is one of the most successful environmental awareness raising projects implemented at the initiative of the Ministry of Environment. In four years, since December 2010, it has become popular as an independent source of environmental information and has been met with great interest. The channel is part of the Ministry’s project to inform the public about the environment through the media, educational broadcasts and films.

The project was financed from the European Regional Development Fund. Figures are best proof of its sizeable yield. These are 44 episodes of the film “A way home” (Lith. “Kelias namo”) shown on TV3, eight documentaries about Lithuanian nature and 44 broadcasts “The nature code” (Lith. “Gamtos kodas”) demonstrated on the LRT channel, 44 radio broadcasts “The green wave” (Lith. “Žalioji banga”) on LRT, 24 broadcasts “Ekovizija” on Lietuvos rytas TV, a Green Film Festival dedicated to documentaries, 24 stories in the Lietuvos rytas daily and 24 publications on the portal, 12 supplements “Good old house” (Lith. “Senas geras namas”) of the Statyk publication and 12 issues of the Aplinka magazine. More about the project

This large-scale project has made a particular contribution to environmental awareness raising through informing the public about the related concerns and solutions. Based on Eurobarometer surveys, in 2008 Lithuanians were among the least environmentally informed EU citizens while already in 2011 the ratio made a large leap from 35 per cent to 55 per cent (the EU average is 60 per cent).

The Ministry of Environment has now started another publicity and environmental awareness raising project. Plans are to release and transmit 220 television and 400 radio broadcasts and to post 1,200 publications on news portals. The texts will cover an area of 140,000 cm2 in the national press, 100,000 cm2 in the regional press and 400,000 m2 in the local press. In addition, at least four publications are planned to be released.
