A mobile group to protect forests2015-01-16
Based on the conclusion of the Special Investigation Service regarding the corruption risk analysis of the activities of the Directorate Generate of State Forests, a mobile forest protection group was formed. The Directorate General of State Forests was obliged to carry out in state forest enterprises a regular non-scheduled control of timber recording, to monitor and control vehicles transporting timber.
“From now on we will have a mobile group of qualified specialists, who will be always ready to control what is going on in forests. Experts will check how timber is sorted out and transported, and they will also ask to produce necessary documents”, said Kęstutis Trečiokas, Minister of Environment.
During the first control inspection, the mobile group checked the clear-cut compartment in Sudervė forest district of the Vilnius state forest enterprise, where exploitation was completed, and round timber stocks in the intermediate warehouse. No violations were detected.
The plans are that the mobile forest control group will pay regular on-site visits to state forest enterprises in order to check forest worksites and warehouses and carry out control timber inspections. The group will evaluate the activities of timber sorting, volume measurement, timber loading into vehicles, and processing of relevant documents.
Environmental experts remind that the campaign Forest 2015 will be launched in the country on 19 January. During this campaign, the documents for round timber transported on vehicles, timber recording in sawmills, and forest harvesting in state and private forests will be inspected.
