At least 3000 ha of new forests each year

Afforestation in Lithuania’s forest enterprises in 2015-2017 is expected to result in at least 500 ha of new forests each year, and owners of private forests will have the possibility of using European Union assistance funds assigned for this purpose and afforest not less than 2500 ha each. This is one of the most important tasks set in the 2015-2017 plan of measures for the implementation of the National Forestry Sector Development Programme for 2012-2020.

This programme obligates not only to increase the area of woodlands in the country but also to ensure more effective management of the forestry sector, promote innovation, improve forest management, sanitary and fire protection measures, recreational forest infrastructure, etc.

The 2015-2017 plan provides for specific measures to conserve and enlarge forests and their resources. One of such measures is growing forest seed orchards and increasing the volume of seed production from these orchards and the amount of forest planting stock grown there. Also, oak woods will be restored or new ones formed in state owned forests, and measures to enlarge oak areas in private forests have been envisioned.

More rational use of forest resources will be ensured by planned additional statutory and organisational measures intended for developing the production of biofuel from timber in private and state owned forests. A completely new measure – forest road inventory – has been provided for. It will help to increase the effectiveness of forest road maintenance and repair in the future.

The 2015-2017 plan also contains measures for increasing the economic efficiency and competiveness of the forestry sector, preserving the sustainability of forest ecosystems, etc.
