Kids hoist thousands of nesting boxes in Lithuanian forests

A few thousand new nesting boxes are to be hoisted across Lithuanian forests as part of a bird welcoming campaign for young nature enthusiasts, led by Lithuanian Environment Minister Kęstutis Trečiokas.

The minister joined the children of the Nemenčinė Childrens’ Social Care Centre today to hoist more than a hundred new nesting boxes for starlings, tits and hoopoes in the local Arvydai forest. “The building of nesting boxes is a meaningful and at the same time entertaining lesson on the subject of wildlife for the kids. In this way, they learn to take care of forests and nature, which is the home for all of us,” the minister said.

Some forestry departments started the campaign last week, with some planning to continue it throughout next week. Young nature enthusiasts guided by forest stewards have already installed nesting boxes in forests near Joniškis, Kazlų Rūda, Panevėžys, Radviliškis, Tytuvėnai and Varėna towns. More than 200 nesting boxes also await tits, flycatchers and owls in the Alytus Forestry Department‘s Dušnionys, Dzirmiškės, Kalesnykai, Punia and Sudvajai forests. In Biržai, schoolchildren hoisted nesting boxes not only in forests, but also in the Antanas Dauguvietis Park in the town. Birds will also find new
homes near the Pastauninkas stream in the western Lithuanian town of Kretinga.

The popular practice of hoisting nesting boxes every spring dates back to more than 90 years ago, when the famous Lithuanian naturalist, Prof. Tadas Ivanauskas, initiated the celebration of Birds Day. Continuing this tradition, the General Forestry Department of the Ministry of Environment has been organising the bird welcoming campaign, entitled Paukščiai grįžta namo (Birds Are Coming Home), for a third consecutive year in all of its 42 regional forestry departments. Sufficient numbers of nesting boxes were made for the campaign by forestry workers during the winter period.

Every year, 3,000 to 4,000 new nesting boxes are erected all over Lithuania.
