Ministry tackles chaos at Palanga beaches

The Lithuanian Environment Minister has approved a special recreation development plan to bring more order into the state-managed Baltic Sea beaches.

The plan covers beach territories from the northern mall of Klaipėda Harbour to the border with Latvia. Under the plan, beaches have been divided into three popularity categories, in addition to allocating areas for men-only, women-only, nude and accessible beaches.

The plan is to develop women-only beaches at Melnragė I and II, as well as near Naglio kalnas and Ošupio takas in Palanga; men-only beaches will be located in Palanga near Naglio kalnas and in the vicinity of Ošupio takas; beaches for people with disabilities will be allocated near Botanikos parkas (Botanical Garden) in Palanga and in Monciškės; and nude beaches will be allocated in Kiruliai, and near Naglio kalnas and Ošupio takas in Palanga.

Regulated areas have been allotted for beach services near each location in an effort to reduce vendor crowding during high season, with separate zones created for public catering, rentals, entertainment and other services. The zone allocation is adapted to optimum visitor flows, also seeking to minimise their visual intrusion into the landscape.

The needs of recreational anglers have also been taken into account, with six jetties foreseen for small sea fishing boats. These will be installed at the southern stretch of Melnragė beach toward the northern mall of Klaipėda Harbour; at the central stretch of the Karklė beach near Cypa stream, at the northern Karklė beach stretch south of Rikinė stream; near the former ship rescue station at Nemirseta; near Ošupis north of Medūza restaurant in Palanga; and in the southern part of Šventoji Harbour.

The approved seaside beach recreation development plan will be in effect until 2025.
