Lithuania tapping into its mineral water resources

Mineral water resources are among Lithuania’s greatest natural assets. At present, there are 37 such water wells listed in the national Register of Geological Resources.

The Lithuanian Statistics Department estimates the value of these fully prospected water resources at around €2.9 billion.

According to the Lithuanian Geology Service, more than 131,000 m³ of underground mineral water was produced from seven wells in Lithuania last year. More than one third of this water was used for spa procedures.

In 2014, spa water consumption increased by 11 percent compared with the previous year. The largest consumption, approximately 13,000 m³, was reported by Aqua spa centre in Druskininkai.

More than two thirds (65 pct) of all underground mineral water produced in Lithuania is drinkable natural mineral water, with 12 retail brands currently on sale. The leading brand, Vytautas, accounts for 22,000 m³, almost a quarter of all the natural mineral water produced last year, followed by Neptūnas and Tichė, in second and third place, respectively.

The Vytautas and Birutė sources are located in Birštonas, Akvilė in Viečiūnai (Druskininkai District), Hermis, Fuldataler, Rasa High, Rasa Light Minerals and Rasa Medium in Drusininkai, Neptunas in Palkabalis village (Varėna Dist.), Rytas in Kabiškių village (Vilnius Dist.), Tichė in Telšiai and Vaiva in Rokiškis.
