Ministry takes control over geothermal heating systems2015-04-08
With geothermal heating becoming more popular in Lithuania, new procedures for the design, installation and dismantling of such systems have been adopted.
Under the new rules, signed by Environment Minister Kęstutis Trečiokas on 3 April, legal entities and individuals will only be allowed to make geothermal drills if they have an approved design prepared by properly certified specialists.
Incompetent installation of a geothermal well may lead to underground water contamination, so the new requirements set out specific installation rules and materials that do not pose a hazard to the environment.
As any geological drilling, geothermal wells must be listed in the Register of Geological Resources, which is managed by the Geology Service of the Ministry of Environment.
The Geology Service and the regional environmental protection departments have the right to inspect geothermal wells and suspend their installation in case of infringements.
