Jackal hunting is open all year round from May2015-04-15
Minister of Environment, Kęstutis Trečiokas, amended the hunting rules and supplemented the list of game.
The golden jackal, a species not common in our natural environment, was added to the list. According to the amended hunting rules, the golden jackal can be hunted throughout the year. This amendment will enter into effect on 1 May.
"The jackal is an animal not common in our natural environment. It may affect the ecosystem in the country and upset its balance. We will soon discuss whether the species should be included in the list of invasive species", said Linas Jonauskas, Vice-Minister of Environment.
The year-round hunting of the jackal was authorised and its inclusion in the Lithuania's list of invasive species was proposed because the likely effect of the new species on the ecosystem is not yet clear and it is uncertain how it will adapt to the vicinity of wolves, lynxes, foxes and racoon dogs. The main prey of the jackal is also unclear yet. These animals may endanger the birds that hatch on the ground. Stomachs of jackals hunted down in Latvia contained roe meat. Estonia declared the golden jackal to be an invasive species and included it in the list of game.
