Discussing climate change on the occasion of Earth Day

On the eve of Earth Day last Friday, the conference “Combating climate change after the Paris Conference: Challenges and Prospects” was held on the initiative of non-governmental environmental organisations at the Representation of the European Commission in Vilnius.

The participants that included representatives of national and municipal authorities, research, educational and non-governmental organisations and the public discussed climate change as a concern and expressed their opinions on the way our country should implement the universally binding agreement on climate change adopted at the close of last year in Paris.

The participants were familiarised with the impacts of climate change in our country and the expected challenges and forecasts by Justinas Kilpys, a representative of the Lithuanian Meteorological Service under the Ministry of Environment. The aims of the Paris Agreement were presented by Stasilė Znutienė, Head of the Climate Change Policy Division of the Pollution Prevention Department of the Ministry of Environment, who discussed the formation and implementation of the climate change policy in Lithuania.

The greatest problem for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in our country is the agricultural and transport sectors. The climate change mitigation measures being implemented and planned in these sectors were presented by representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Transport and Communications. The non-governmental organisations also shared their views on the Paris Agreement. Their representatives made some critical remarks on the climate change mitigation and adaptation measures being implemented in Lithuania with the money from the EU structural and investment funds.
