Utena giant unearthed

Last week saw the unearthing of the Utena giant – the Puntukas of Biliakiemis. This huge boulder, a protected natural site, has been the subject of research by specialists of the Lithuanian Geological Survey (LGS) under the Ministry of Environment since last year on the initiative of the Utena District Municipality Administration.

The true thickness of 1.9 m and the complicated spatial form of the part hidden in the earth have been unveiled. The maximum measurements of the Puntukas of Biliakiemis are 6.2 m in length, 4.1 m in width, 3.5 in height and 16 m in horizontal circumference. Compared to the largest known boulders in Lithuania, this stone is in the fourth top ten by the width, in the second top ten by the length and height and in the third top ten by the circumference. According to LGS specialists, it would be worthwhile to clarify its size using the photo-gravimetric or spatial scanning methods which would enable the precise evaluation of the boulder’s volume as well.

The Puntukas of Biliakiemis is a witness of the former glacial period in our country. The boulder will be made available to visitors after adaptation through the effort of workers from the Utena Eldership.
