Experts teach industrialists to manage chemical substances properly

Today, around one hundred representatives of various Lithuanian companies and institutions have gathered at the Ministry of Environment to deepen their knowledge on the proper management, registration and authorisation of chemical substances and the implementation of the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).

Chemical substances are registered in order to establish a system obliging industrial entities to assume responsibility for the safety of their products. The requirements are to conduct an adequate number of trials and to collect sufficient information about chemical substances as well as to provide for risk management and safety measures.

With a view to assist companies to fulfil the duties related to the management of chemical substances established under the REACH Regulation in a proper and timely manner, the Ministry of Environment, in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency, the European Chemicals Agency and the European Chemical Industry Council, held a seminar “Management of Chemical Substances: REACH Registration until 2018, Authorisation and Impact Scenarios” on 17 June 2016. Presentations were delivered by the representatives of the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency and the experts from the European Chemical Industry Council (CEFIC) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). CEFIC expert Dr. Erwin Annys presented the process of drafting chemical substances registration documentation and the opportunity for cooperation with other providers of data for chemical substance registration. ECHA expert Joana Kosk-Bienko analysed the possibilities of using extended safety data sheets.

Our hopes are that the seminar was useful and helped to improve the knowledge of proper management of chemical substances in order to avoid the danger posed by them on human health and the environment.
