Seal relocation operation at the Zoo

Joyful changes are taking place in the Lithuanian Zoo. From now on visitors will be able to enjoy the renovated enclosure of the grey seal named Kajus. When renovating the enclosure, the employees of the Lithuanian Zoo faced an extraordinary challenge – the animal had to be found a new home for the period that repair works were carried out in the pool of the seal.

The relocation of an animal is a procedure that requires thorough preparation. This year, the relocation operation of two lions which arrived from the Netherlands has been carried out in the Zoo.

“It has been several years that a team of workers trained to work with animal relocations has been operating at the Zoo; it is employed when we carry out repairs or bring in new animals. It is a complicated and dangerous job and the workers are aware that they often risk their lives and the lives of their colleagues” says Jelena Trasauskienė, Zoologist of the Predatory Mammals Division at the Zoo. The seal was moved from its enclosure six years ago. For the period of repair works, the seal was relocated to the pool of hippopotamuses located in the Zoo.

The seal enclosure is the place which attracts the most attention of visitors at the Zoo. Children enjoy feeding it with fish, and it is hard to come close to this enclosure on weekends as there are large crowds of visitors gathered around it. Lately, the pool of the seal was attracting the attention of concerned visitors due to its particular poor condition; the stucco started peeling off in the pool, and thus, in the course of time, this would have caused a threat to the health of the animal.

From now on the renovated enclosure of the seal will delight all visitors big and small. You are welcome to visit the Lithuanian Zoo any day!
