The Zoo celebrates its 78th birthday!

At the end of the last week, the Lithuanian Zoo invited everyone to celebrate its 78th birthday. The birthday celebrations continued for three days, i. e. from 1 to 3 July.

On 1 July 1938, during the interwar period, Tadas Ivanauskas, renowned naturalist and professor, founded the first zoo in Lithuania. The then exposition of the Zoo was composed of only 40 exhibits, whereas now, 78 years later, the collection of animals kept in the Zoo at Kaunas expanded to 3,000.

On 1 July 2016, the entertainment was organised not only at the Zoo but in the city of Kaunas as well. Some of the birthday celebration events were transferred to the fountain site on the Laisvės Avenue. Here, the curious ones could listen to amazing stories about exotic animals told by the professional educologists at the Zoo, and all guests were invited to get to know the wild nature better and meet the insects, the smallest residents of the Zoo. The participants in the events on Laisvės Avenue could release their “inner beast” by having their faces painted to look like an exotic animal.

On 2 July, there was the Family Day organised at the Zoo, during which all those present were able to take part in various games and attractions and receive a prize for their efforts. On the last day of the event, one could enjoy a piece of a free cake and win great gifts at the Zoo. More than 1,000 guests listed to the interactive presentations about animals and had an opportunity to touch a reptile or feed a seal.

On the occasion of the 78th anniversary of the Zoo, there was a lottery, and the participants in the celebration could win exclusive prizes, such as an air balloon, plane or paraglider flight. This morning a little monkey from the Zoo, with the help of zookeepers, drew four winning lottery tickets.
