A sharp drop in illegal logging nationwide in the first semester


State officials in charge of forests have identified 123 instances of illegal logging, with 1,200 cubic meters of timber produced over the first semester 2016. This presents a sharp drop compared to the same period in 2015, including a drop of as much of 70% in the private forests and approximately 50% in the State-owned forests.

Stealing of ready timber products from the State-forests also appeared less common. There were 5 such incidents reported in the first semester 2016, with 57 m3 of timber stolen. There were 14 incidents reported in the same period in 2015, with 147 m3 of timber stolen.

Illegal logging has caused damage of EUR 6,900 to the forest of managers and users, as well as environmental damage of EUR 162,400.

328 offenders were sanctioned in administrative proceedings for illegal logging and other violations of the Law on Forests, with total value of fines imposed of EUR 22,000.
