Kęstutis Trečiokas believes sustainable development to be a key to a successful statehood2016-07-19
On 18 to 20 of July 2016, Kęstutis Trečiokas, the Minister of Environment, is attending the United Nations High Level Political Forum (HLPF), hosted in New York. The forum marks a main event to shape international policy on sustainable development, and to monitor and assess the progress of implementation.
The title of the topic of the on-going forum runs “Ensuring that no one is left behind”. This is the first forum taking place after the summit of the United Nations held in September 2015, where over 150 heads of States and Governments have approved the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and new objectives of sustainable development.
The Ministers gathered at the forum in New York are engaged in discussions on further steps to be taken globally in order to accomplish the objectives of sustainable development. Representatives of 22 countries have used the forum as an opportunity to present the progress made by their countries. As for Lithuania, the principles of sustainable development were established in 2003, when the Government approved the National Strategy for Sustainable Development, and were subsequently integrated in a number of other documents dedicated to strategic planning.
When addressing the forum, the Minister of Environment pointed out that the implementation measures in place shall determine the success of the new development agenda, which will in turn lead to improved human health, a more rapid growth and creation of new markets and jobs. Neither sustainable development, nor accomplishment of the agenda is possible, unless each aspect of environmental protection is fully integrated, since the role of environment is crucial in a number of fields, including reduction of poverty and famine, improvement of the economy and improvement of the health of the planet Earth and mankind. The Minister has stressed that environmental aspects should first be integrated and coordinated with other policies on national, regional and global level alike.
The Minister has stressed the environmental protection and the growth of economy to be mutually related and complementary and has then informed the attendance of the forum of tangible steps taken by Lithuania to mitigate the climate change through promotion of reliance of renewables and enhancement of energy efficiency.
According to Kęstutis Trečiokas, speaking at the forum, “each and every country should be responsible for sustainable development. Ambitious objectives of the development agenda will not be accomplished unless all the countries, both large and small, as well as international community work together and involve the public, the academics, and the private sector in their endeavours”.
The HPLF is also expected to approve a statement by the Ministers and define policy guidelines and recommendations on further implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as well as integration of economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development. The Ministry of Environment of Lithuania is responsible for coordination of implementation of the objectives of sustainable development. Involvement in the activities of the HLPF matters in order to observe global trends and to make sure the objectives of sustainable development find their place into national policy, and the monitoring and reporting mechanisms is set up in line with the model offered by the United Nations.
