Open voting at the poll of the Lithuanian Tree of the Year2016-09-05
The environmentalists are now very busy with a new poll, since today the poll is open for the Lithuanian Tree of the Year, with 12 trees as candidates brought forward. These are mostly oak trees, including Alkos oak, Rykantai (Viktor Berg) oak, Bradesiai oak, Elmė six-trunk oak, Gudlaukis oak, Jurgis Bielinis oak, Stelmužė oak, and Unity oak in Žeimelis. The list also includes fifteen-trunk lime tree in Papilė, hollow pine tree in Darželiai village, Ragana ash tree and Raganos spruce-Raganos broom. Lithuanian tree of the year will be elected by the public, through voting from 5 of September to 10 of October at: http://apklausa.am.lt/index.php/989221/lang-lt.
Lithuanian tree of the year will be announced on 17 of October. The tree will then be included in the contest of the European Tree of the Year. The contest, based on the Czech initiative, first took place in 2011. The first European Tree of the Year was Romanian lime tree in Leliceni, followed by Hungarian old lime tree of Felsőmocsolád in 2012, followed by Hungarian plane tree in Eger in 2013, followed by Bulgarian elm tree in Sliven in 2014, followed by Estonian oak in Saaremaa in 2015, and lastly by the Hungarian oak in 2016.
