Authority tightens control on transboundary shipments of waste

Yesterday specialists of the Waste Department of the Ministry of Environment, the Environmental Protection Agency, the regional environmental protection departments and the State Environmental Protection Authority discussed a draft plan on inspections of transboundary shipments of waste prepared by this authority.
The plan has been drawn up with account of the new EU requirements for the planning of control on transboundary shipments of waste. The foreseen systematic inspections will help to prevent illegal shipments of waste. The drafting of the plan involved the analysis of information available on transboundary shipments of waste, in particular their number, illegal shipment statistics, main streams and directions of waste shipped, and the number and nature of inspections of those shipments.

The participants of the meeting discussed the priorities of the planned inspections, cooperation with other authorities of Lithuania and other states, frequency and nature of inspections and other questions. In the immediate future, this draft plan will be harmonised with other Lithuanian authorities responsible for the development of the plan. The final draft plan is expected to be produced by 31 October.
