Energy efficiency in buildings on international agenda

The 77th session of the United Nations Committee on Housing and Land Management held in Geneva was devoted to the development of sustainable smart cities. “It is no surprise that this session has paid particularly great attention to the increase of energy efficiency of buildings as these consume more than 40 percent of all energy”, says Daiva Matonienė, Vice-Minister of Environment.

According to her, the possibilities for energy savings through the modernisation of buildings are huge. For example, in the EU member states as many as 75 percent of buildings are not energy efficient and this problem is relevant for the whole international community.

“I was happy to be able to introduce the participants of the session to our country’s successful experience in renovating old multi-apartment buildings and implementing the programme on increasing their energy efficiency,” noted Daiva Matonienė. The benefit of modernisation is obvious in Lithuania. A renovated apartment block saves about 50 to 60 percent of energy. Under a new renovation model, more than 1500 old multi-apartment buildings will have been modernised from 2013 to the end of this year. The speed of renovation is expected to increase with each year.

According to the Vice-Minister, cooperation with other countries and sharing of experience are very important for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. Lithuania has already been convinced of this after launching integrated renovation of apartment blocks and receiving assistance from Germany. “The Ministry of Environment will continue to develop international cooperation on the renovation not only of multi-apartment houses but also of public buildings. We find it very important to learn from the experience gained by other countries,” says the Vice-Minister.
