Dubrava welcomes first modern forest tree nursery in Lithuania

This week, the public institution Dubrava Experimental and Training Forest Enterprise has seen the opening of a modern forest tree nursery of a new type. This is the first plant nursery of its kind in Lithuania where trees are grown with a closed root system.

After the squall storm that had roared through Lithuania on 10 August 2010, the Dubrava forest enterprise had to cut the broken and windfallen trees. The additional proceeds from this were successfully used in an effective and meaningful way. The foresters of Dubrava had a unique idea to establish a modern plant nursery for growing trees in containers. The forest enterprise designed and built a cold storage facility of about 2 400 m3 with sorting chambers intended for keeping forest seedlings, a production building with innovative equipment for filling and sowing in the containers and washing them, and four 1 300 m2 greenhouses with outdoor grounds and a modern watering and microclimate control system.

The implemented project is a distinct quality leap in the forest seedling growing technology. This new method will allow growing tree seedlings in containers and cut their growth time almost by half. Normally seedlings are grown for approximately four years, but the new technology will enable the nursery to do this in just a year or two. Earlier the nursery used to sell about 1.5 million seedlings annually. With the new method, annual sales are expected to reach some 5 or 6 million seedlings in a few years already.
