EU support of EUR 2.6 million to improve the air quality in the capital

By Order of Minister of Environment Kęstutis Navickas, the Vilnius City Municipality was allocated almost EUR 2.6 million under the measure of the 2014–2020 EU Operational Funds Investment Programme for the improvement of the air quality. This measure is aimed at reducing particle pollution in the major cities of the country so that their concentrations do not exceed the air quality levels deemed harmful to human health and the environment.

It is the last fifth project intended for the improvement of the air quality and funded under the aforementioned EU programme. Four projects are already being implemented in Kaunas, Klaipėda, Šiauliai, and Panevėžys. The EU support intended for these projects accounts for up to 85 % of their total value. The remaining funds will have to be allocated by the municipalities.

By implementing this project, the Municipality of the capital will draft an air quality management plan and acquire ten units of street cleaning and maintenance equipment chemical materials are managed effectively. Besides, the plans are to organise two public information campaigns. They will encourage the residents to reduce air pollution by applying more environmentally friendly methods to heat individual houses, ensuring that their vehicles use less polluting energy sources and choosing greener means of transport more often.
