Lithuania suggests that Latvia not procure electricity from unsafe nuclear power plants

at the Lithuanian–Belarusian border, where the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) constructed in Astravas can be seen from. The ambassadors were requested to participate actively in the discussion on safety of the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.

According to the Minister of Environment, the Lithuanian position on the Astravas NPP is fundamental and clear: construction of the Astravas NPP must be halted due to incompliance of the project with international environmental and nuclear safety standards, due to multiple very serious deficiencies in the project development process, constantly occurring grave incidents at the Astravas NPP construction site, low labour safety culture, lack of competence and expertise shown in the course of developing the Astravas NPP project by nuclear safety supervisory institutions and organisations performing the construction work and due to constant manipulations with international instruments and the public opinion in Belarus and neighbouring countries.

On 26 May 2017 the Speaker of the Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis met with the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima Inara Murniece to discuss current issues of strengthening the bilateral and regional cooperation. Latvia was invited to join the Lithuanian initiative to adopt corresponding legal acts that would prohibit importing electricity from unsafe nuclear power plants. The Lithuanian Seimas passed a similar law on 20 April 2017.

Improperly selected place for construction of the NPP is one of the biggest threats and gravest violations in this project. The Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union of the EU Marosh Shefchovich (Maroš Šefčovič) during his visit in Vilnius urged the Baltic States to search for an economically efficient solution to ensure security of supply for the entire region.
